Deodorant is probably one of the least exciting products in your bathroom.

You put it on in the morning, get dressed and get on with your day.

But when you think about it, deodorant is also one of the personal care products many of us use every single day directly on our underarms, sometimes more than once.

So perhaps it deserves a little more attention.

Your underarms are skin, too

We spend plenty of time thinking about what we put on our face, but our underarms rarely get the same consideration.

The underarm area contains a high concentration of sweat glands, and the skin can be particularly sensitive, especially after shaving or other forms of hair removal.

Then we apply deodorant directly over that skin. Day after day.

That doesn't mean you need to be afraid of what's sitting in your bathroom cabinet.

It simply makes deodorant a pretty good candidate for the same question you might already ask about your cleanser, moisturiser or serum:

What's actually in it?

Deodorant and antiperspirant aren't quite the same thing

First, a useful distinction.

Although we often use the words interchangeably, deodorants and antiperspirants aren't designed to do exactly the same job.

Deodorants are primarily designed to help manage body odour, while antiperspirants are designed to reduce perspiration.

Sweating itself is a completely normal bodily function. The familiar smell we associate with sweaty underarms develops when sweat interacts with bacteria living naturally on the skin.

Understanding that difference can make it easier to decide which kind of product you actually want to use in your daily routine.

Take a closer look at the ingredient list

Not every ingredient is problematic for every person, and a long chemical-looking name doesn't automatically make something bad.

But if you're applying a product to your underarms every single day, there are some commonly used ingredients that may be worth recognising — particularly if your skin is sensitive.

• Added synthetic fragrance

Fragrance is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis from cosmetics, and deodorants are one of the personal care products in which fragrances are commonly found.

If you're sensitive to fragrance, checking for Parfum or Fragrance on an ingredient list can be worthwhile.

Sanctum's Women's and Men's Natural Deodorant INCI lists do not contain an ingredient listed as Parfum or Fragrance.

They do contain essential oils and naturally occurring aromatic constituents, which are clearly identified in the ingredient lists.

Because natural doesn't automatically mean allergen-free either.

• Alcohol Denat

Alcohol-based personal care formulas can sometimes feel drying or irritating, particularly on already sensitive skin.

If you've ever experienced that familiar deodorant sting after shaving, it's worth looking at what is actually in the formula rather than assuming discomfort is simply part of using deodorant.

• Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol is used in many personal care products, including deodorants, as a humectant, solvent and formulation aid.

For most people, it isn't a problem, but it can cause irritant or allergic contact dermatitis in some individuals.

One important distinction: our formulas contain Propanediol, which should not simply be confused with Propylene Glycol when reading the label.

And what about “natural”?

This is where shopping gets a little more complicated.

The deodorant aisle is full of words such as:

Natural.
Clean.
Botanical.
Organic.

They can sound reassuring, but they don't all mean the same thing.

A deodorant can contain an organic botanical ingredient without the finished product itself being Certified Organic.

So rather than stopping at the biggest word on the front of the pack, turn it around.

Four things worth checking on your deodorant

1. The full ingredient list

The front of the packaging tells you how a brand wants to describe its product.

The INCI tells you what's actually in the formula.

Getting into the habit of reading it can help you make a more informed decision based on what matters to you and your skin.

2. What “organic” actually refers to

Does the product simply contain some organic ingredients?

Or has the finished formula been independently Certified Organic?

They're not necessarily the same thing.

3. Independent certification

If Certified Organic is important to you, look for evidence of independent certification rather than relying solely on words such as natural or organic.

Under COSMOS, certification involves requirements covering areas including ingredient composition, manufacturing and processing, packaging, labelling, environmental management, inspection and certification.

4. The organic percentage

This is one of the easiest things to check once you know to look for it.

COSMOS ORGANIC products disclose the percentage of organic ingredients in the total product.

So rather than simply being told that something is organic, you can see what proportion of the finished formula actually is.

There's another side to ingredient transparency that's worth talking about.

Natural ingredients can cause reactions, too.

For example, both Sanctum deodorants contain Sodium Bicarbonate, an ingredient commonly found in natural deodorants. They also contain essential oils and naturally occurring aromatic constituents.

Some people may find certain deodorant ingredients irritating regardless of whether they're natural or synthetic.

A small everyday choice worth thinking about

Choosing a deodorant probably isn't going to be the biggest decision you make today.
